Description

They are robust, deep-bodied reef fish characterized by its white-to-silvery color, vertical black stripes, and distinctive, forked tail. 

Behavior

To select the best males and maximize the survival rate of her offspring, the female will pool her eggs with those of other females into a single male's territory and build a larger nest. 

Reproduction

Sergeant major fish are oviparous reef fish that reproduce through external fertilization, with males playing a key role in nest preparation and protection.  

Communication & Perception

They communicate through a combination of visual, acoustic, and behavioral signals, particularly during mating and territorial disputes.
