Description

The Osteochilus vittatus, also known as the bonylip barb, is a freshwater fish from Southeast Asia. It has a torpedo-shaped silver body, 6 to 9 rows of dark spots, and a distinct black spot at the tail base. Its fins are pink and turn bright red at the edges.

Behavior

The Osteochilus vittatus, commonly known as the bonylip barb, is a peaceful, herbivorous, and migratory schooling fish native to Southeast Asia. It behaves as an active forager, spending its time grazing on algae, plankton, and plant roots along riverbeds

Reproduction

Osteochilus vittatus, known as the bonylip barb, reproduces via external fertilization. Females scatter thousands of tiny eggs into the water. Males then release milt (sperm) to fertilize them. Spawning is triggered by heavy rains and flooding, prompting adults to migrate into flooded areas

Communication & Perception

Osteochilus vittatus (the bonylip barb) uses chemical signals, sound, and movement to communicate. Like most schooling fish, its sensory world relies heavily on a specialized lateral line system and a keen sense of taste to navigate muddy or sandy rivers.

Predator(s)

Larger carnivorous fish, semi-aquatic mammals, reptiles, and birds
