Description

"Chicken feather" seaweed consists of branched fronds interconnected by stolons. Its color ranges from light to dark green, and the fronds have a soft, feathery appearance. It is commonly found in shallow, calm waters, such as tide pools or sandy reef flats. It uses rhizoids—root-like structures—to anchor itself to sand or coral rubble; these structures also serve to absorb nutrients from the sediment.

Behavior

Fierce competition for space and sunlight occurs within coral reef ecosystems. To secure access to sunlight, macroalgae have evolved various adaptations that provide a competitive edge, such as high tolerance for a wide temperature range and the ability to produce toxic chemical compounds that make them unappealing as a food source.
