Description

It has a long, sleek, ribbon-shaped body. It features a distinctive metallic, pearly-silver coloration, large scales, and a deeply cleft, upturned jaw with two tactile barbels on the lower lip for surface feeding. 

Behavior

They are known as "water monkeys" due to their unique ability to leap up to 6 feet out of the water to catch prey from branches. 

Reproduction

They reproduce in the wild primarily during the low-water, dry season. They are paternal mouthbrooders, with males carrying fertilized eggs and larvae in their mouths for up to two months to protect them
