Description

The bignose unicornfish, as its name suggests, has a protruding part on its head, making it seem like it has a big nose. Its coloration as an adult is usually grayish brown or brownish red, with small, dark blue spots on its head and the upper side of its flank.

Behavior

Found in deep lagoons or seaward reefs, forming loose aggregations when feeding. When not feeding, are found solitary or in pairs.

Its feeding patterns change depending its life phase. Juveniles are herbivores and graze on algae, sub adults are omnivores, while adults are mainly carnivores, actively hunting for zooplankton.

Reproduction

Fertilization occurs externally, after females rleease eggs in batches. Spawning occurs synchronously.

Communication & Perception

Most surgeonfish use visual cues to communicate and sight to look for food, avoid danger and navigate the seafloor.
