Indian Triggerfish

Habitat & Distribution : Reef-associated, depth range of 1 - 30 m, Indian Ocean

Diet : Sponge, algae, zooplankton

Lifespan : 10 - 20 years

Description

This fish has a brown oblong body with black fins. It is very similar in apperance to the Black Triggerfish (Melichthys niger), but is easily differentiated by its key characteristic, the white lines on the base of its dorsal and ventral fins. 

Behavior

Often solitary, living in coral-rich areas. It digs holes under reef bases to shelter itself. Is famously aggressive when it comes to protecting its eggs.

Reproduction

Oviparous, forming distinct pairs when breeding

Communicates through a combination of audible vocalizations, dynamic color changes, and specific physical behaviors
