Description

The raccoon butterflyfish is a brightly colored, deep-bodied fish that gets its name from the distinctive black-and-white marking on its head, which resembles a raccoon's mask 

Behavior

In the wild, they are active during the day, scanning the reef for food. They are, however, known to be nocturnal feeders in certain environments. They are opportunistic omnivores that feed on small anemones, coral polyps, tubeworms, and nudibranchs 

Reproduction

Raccoon butterflyfish are monogamous, oviparous fish that form pairs during breeding in spring and early summer. They reproduce by ascending to the surface to release buoyant gametes, which are fertilized in the water column and drift with currents, hatching within 28–30 hours into pelagic larvae 

Communication & Perception

Raccoon butterflyfish communicate primarily through visual cues, body language, and color changes, using these methods to establish pair bonds, defend territory, and confuse predators
