Description
The Pacific Sailfin Tang is a large, disc-shaped surgeonfish recognized by its exceptionally tall dorsal and anal fins. It features vertical white/yellow bars against a dark brown-grey body, with a white-spotted snout
Behavior
When alarmed, stressed, or establishing dominance, the Sailfin Tang will extend its massive dorsal and anal fins, creating a large, imposing presence.
Reproduction
They reproduce through pelagic spawning in pairs, usually near the surface, with a high lunar cycle dependency. Females are often larger than males, and they often form pairs that defend shared feeding territories, releasing eggs and sperm during a quick upward spawning rush
Communication & Perception
They communicate primarily through visual cues, using dramatic changes in body shape, color, and fin positioning to signal aggression, fear, or courtship. These behaviors, along with their specialized physical features, help them manage territorial boundaries and interact with other species on the reef
Predator(s)
Reef sharks, lionfish, groupers, moray eels
Conservation Status : Least Concern
