Redtail Butterflyfish

Description

It features a dark, brownish-red body with a distinct, horizontal checked or spotted pattern. Key features include a vibrant red-orange tail, a prominent vertical white stripe behind the eyes, and a black face 

Behavior

They are carnivores that feed on coral polyps, sponges, and small invertebrates by constantly picking at rocks. They are generally peaceful but territorial toward others of their own kind 

Reproduction

Redtail butterflyfish are monogamous, forming strong, long-term pair bonds and spawning in pairs within their territorial range. They are oviparous, releasing small, pelagic eggs into the water column. 

Communication & Perception

Redtail butterflyfish communicate primarily through visual signals and social behaviors tailored for maintaining long-term pair bonds and defending territories on coral reefs

Sharks, barracudas, groupers, larger morays
