Description
The mandarin dragonet, also known as the psychedelic fish, derives its name from its striking and beautiful coloration, which is said to resemble the robes of Chinese imperial officials. Its scaleless body is blue or green, featuring wavy, alternating stripes of orange, red, blue, and green; other colors may also appear within the pattern. Its fan-shaped tail is bright red with blue edges. Males are typically larger than females.
Behavior
This fish is generally peaceful but can exhibit territorial behavior toward similar species. Mandarin dragonets can be found in groups or pairs.
Reproduction
They exhibit unique mating behavior, in which males and females approach each other and begin "dancing" with upward, circular movements within the water column. They release sperm and eggs while ascending (classifying them as pelagic spawners). Up to 200 eggs can be released at a time.
Communication & Perception
The Mandarin dragonet secretes a foul-smelling, bitter-tasting mucus. They are believed to use this mucus to deter predators.
Predator
Lionfish, Grouper, and Moray Eel
