Description
Its shape is cylindrical, tapering towards the posterior end. At the anterior end, there are twenty oral tentacles with branched tips. These surround the mouth, which is located on the underside of the body. The animal is soft and flexible and covered with fleshy papillae. Its color is usually charcoal gray or reddish black.
Behavior
When threatened, black sea cucumbers can expel their internal organs through their anus. These organs are sticky and can distract, entangle, or deter predators. The sea cucumber can later regenerate these lost organs.
Reproduction
They reproduce both sexually and asexually. They typically spawn by releasing eggs and sperm into the water column during dry seasons or warmer months. Asexually, they reproduce via transverse fission, dividing into two parts and regenerating missing organs
Communication & Perception
The black sea cucumber primarily communicate and interact with their environment through chemical signaling using pheromones. These chemical signals are essential for finding mates, aggregation, and territorial marking.
