Description
The Bala Shark, despite its name, is not a true shark. It is called as such due to its silvery torpedo-like body and large, black marginated fins. There's a groove on the lower lip that opens downward.
Behavior
Juveniles are skittish. Forms schools of at least three fish. As adults, are relatively peaceful towards other fish.
Reproduction
Breeds when it reaches the age of three years old or the size of 12 cm (5 inches). Females will release their eggs into the open water, where it will be fertilized externally by the males. Neither parent look after the eggs, but the male usually protects its female mate from danger.
Communication & Perception
It has well-developed hearing. Cyprinids have the Weberian organ / apparatus, a set of bones and ossicles that transfers motion from its gas bladder to its inner ear. This organ can also help the fish sense difference in motion in its swim bladder due to change in atmospheric pressure and depth.
They use visual signals, sound and vibration to communicate.
