Deskripsi
They are small, slender marine fish renowned for their vibrant, gradient coloration and a spine protruding from their dorsal fin
Perilaku
They live near the bottom, facing the current, waiting for small invertebrates to pass by to prey on. Adults live alone or in pairs in burrows in the sand, while juveniles live in small groups. If threatened, they will hide in their burrows.
Reproduksi
They are monogamous, egg-laying fish that form strong pair bonds and share a burrow for spawning. They are seasonal breeders (often spring) that deposit hundreds to thousands of adhesive, demersal eggs in their burrow, which the male guards and tends for 3-4 days until hatching.
Komunikasi & Persepsi
They communicate primarily by twitching their long,, pennant-like dorsal fin back and forth to signal danger or territorial boundaries to others.
Predator
Moray eels, lionfish, snappers, groupers and other larger predatory fish
Status Konservasi : Least Concern/ Unlisted
Fakta unik
The first dorsal fin spine is very long and can be used to "lock" the body of this fish in a coral crevice when it feels threatened, similar to a triggerfish.
