Description
These elliptical fish are striking for their royal blue colored body with a black blotch starting from their eyes all the way to their tail that looks like the number "6" sideways and yellow fins and tail.
Behavior
They are diurnal fish that are often found in neritic /shallow areas, grazing together in schools.
Reproduction
Blue tang are broadcast spawners, releasing eggs out on open water to be fertilized. They usually spawn starting in the afternoon and the eggs will drift out in the ocean and hatch within 24 hours
Communication & Perception
They use visual cues such as rapid color changes, they are able to change from vibrant blue, dark blue to deep purple, to warn rivals, signal stress, and blend into their environments

Fun Fact
Despite being famously known as the character "Dory" from Finding Nemo, the blue tang is not the dory fish that we usually eat! This fish is poisonous since it has ciguatoxin, a type of toxin that caused nausea, vomitting, or tingling fingers and toes. The fish that is marketed as "dory fish" and typically consumed in Asia is actually the shark catfish (Pangasius spp.)
