Description

The yellowfin surgeonfish is easily recognized by its yellow dorsal and pectoral fins, as well as a yellow stripe resembling a mask through its eyes.. It is one of the largest members of the Acanthuridae family 

Behavior

They inhabit deeper waters in bays and enclosed lagoons, in large groups with distinct territories and hierarchies. Territorial in nature, this fish is aggressive toward other surgeonfish that enter its territory. Like other botanas, it has a scalpel-like spine at the base of its tail. 

Reproduction

Yellowfin surgeonfish are broadcast spawners that form large spawning aggregations, typically during new and full moons 

Communication & Perception

communicate primarily through dramatic color changes, shifting between shades of blue-grey to highlight yellow patches around their eyes or to display vibrant blue stripes. They utilize these color shifts to express mood, react to environmental stress, and facilitate mating rituals
