Description

The largest species of freshwater turtle in Southeast Asia. They have dark brown to black carapace which is smooth and oval in shape and a pale yellow-brown to off white plastron. The head is wedge shaped, with strong jaws. 

Behavior

They are primarily piscivorous and omnivorous, feeding on fish, fruit, and vertebrates, while inhabiting large rivers, lakes, and swamps. These turtles are often seen basking on banks and are known for being shy and elusive 

Reproduction

The Malaysian Giant Turtle can lay 10-12 eggs on land, in mud or sandbanks. They are known to nest once or twice a year
