Description

This fish is known for its elongated, flattened body and distinctive tiger-like markings. Its name is derived from its long, spade-shaped snout, which it uses to forage along the riverbed. 

Behavior

Unlike many catfish that sit and wait for food, the Tiger Shovelnose is an active swimmer, constantly patrolling the middle and bottom layers of the tank at night 

Reproduction

These fish are migratory, moving to specific areas to spawn, often in conjunction with the changing water levels of the Amazon rainy season. 

Communication & Perception

Like other large catfish, they use their long barbels to explore their environment and locate food in dark or murky waters. These barbels are highly sensitive and act as receptors to detect chemical cues from prey or other fish
