Description

They are large, freshwater-dwelling, prehistoric-looking fish characterized by an elongated body, cartilaginous skeleton, and five distinct rows of bony plates called scutes. 

Behavior

Found in deep and shallow parts of rivers, with moderate to swift current usually at depths of 1 to 8 m. Adults live essentially in freshwater although some fish frequently occur in estuaries. 

Reproduction

They are potamodromous, meaning they spend their entire life in fresh water but migrate long distances to spawn. Unlike other sturgeon, they continue to feed during their reproductive migration.

They rely heavily on chemical, electrical, and tactile senses for foraging, environmental navigation, and reproduction
