Description
The asian small clawed otter is the smallest species of otter in the world, only weighing 5 kg maximum. They have a dense brown waterproof coat so that water can fall right off, partially webbed paws with very short claws, and a highly sensitive, long, muscular tail used as a rudder
Behavior
After swimming or feeding, they tend to rub against logs and vegetation in the area to leave their scent, a form of scent marking. They use their whiskers to sense changes in currents and water pressure.
Reproduction
These animals are monogamous, mating for life and breeding year-round, typically producing two litters annually. After a 60–72 day gestation, 1–6 pups are born in bank dens, with both parents and sometimes older offspring cooperatively raising the young
Communication & Perception
Asian small clawed otters are social pack animals and communicate by intricate chirps and scent marking to signal other otters.
Predator(s)
Crocodiles, snakes, wild cats
